UPDATE:
Step 2 is no longer needed, provided that you use a newer version of the backup managers mentioned in step 3.
First I would like to make the following statement:
- I don’t condone the use of pirated video games. Support those that makes the games. Use this hack to run homebrew and your own legitimate backups.
- Hacking your PS3 might be illegal at your choice of location.
- I am in no way, shape or form responsible for what you do with your machine.
- Continue on your own risk, and have fun.
Now when we have that out of the way this is what you need to pull this off:
- PS3, fat or slim doesn’t matter.
- USB drive with at least 180MB free space.
Step 1 – Update the firmware
First, make sure that you have the 3.55 original firmware (ofw) installed on your machine. This hack might work with other firmwares but I haven’t tested that myself so I give no guarantees. Now let’s download a prepatched (you could do it yourself, if you google it you will most likely find help on how to do this) 3.55 custom firmware (cfw) by kmeaw (there are other cfws like GeoHot’s, google for it if you want to try it instead), start off with downloading this file (mirrors). Unpack the RAR file and you will find a file called PS3UPDAT.PUP, create the following folder structure on the USB drive /PS3/UPDATE/ and copy the PS3UPDATE.PUP file to that location.
Put the USB drive in the PS3 and do an update via XMB. If you for some reason get an error that says something like “You already have the latest firmware installed” you will have to do this in recovery mode (read this). If the update was a success, go to step 2.
Step 2 – Installing the patch
Next we need to install something called a lv2 patch on our PS3. This patch needs to be run, once every reboot, before starting any of the backup managers for them to work properly. The lv2 patch is a package file and is installed via XMB. Download the lv2 patch here. Simply put this in the root of the USB drive and select Install Package in the menu on the PS3.
Step 3 – Installing backup managers
The backup manager is the software that allows you to start your homebrew and/or backuped games. I have a favorite manager called MultiMan (v1.13.04) (base package, mega package or another mega package if you use another firmware than the one I linked to such as GeoHot’s). Simply put the pkg file on the root of the USB drive and install it from the Install package in the menu.
Other backup managers that I think are worth to mention are:
Gaia Manager, the latest version (v2.04) doesn’t require to run the lv2 patch before running the manager. Download here.
Rogero Manager (v7.9b) for kmeaw (normal version, stealth version), other firmware (normal version, stealth version). If you play online, use the stealth version to lower the risk of your account being banned, don’t use this as a 100% guarantee that you will be safe though. The kmeaw version has the lv2 patch included so there’s no need to run that beforehand, I don’t know if that’s the case for the other one.
Step 4 – Using backup managers
All of the backup managers linked to above comes with a built-in ftp server which allows you to upload and download files directly to your PS3. To do this you need an FTP client such as FileZilla or whatever floats your boat, I personally use FTPRush which recently has become freeware. When you have started the backup manager of your choice you should see an IP address (e.g. 192.168.0.199) on the screen. This is the unique address to your PS3. Open up your FTP client and connect to that address, leave the port as 21 (default FTP port), select anonymous login and if possible uncheck Passive mode and/or passive transfers. If successful you should see some folders and especially one called dev_hdd0 this is the internal hard drive of the PS3, inside that one you’ll find a bunch of other folders but most importantly GAMES, GAMEZ and/or BRRips depending on where you told the backup manager to look for games.
Backup a game by starting the manager, insert the game disc, select it in the game menu and choose backup in the manager. This might take a while, depending on what game you are backuping, so sit back and relax and drink some coffee or something. To run a game from the manager, first make sure that you have any original PS3 game in the slot, then simply select it in the list and press X (if you’re using MultiMan, answer “No” when asked if you want to start the game from within the manager. That rarely works). After a few seconds you should return to XMB, now in the game menu browse until you find the disc icon. Then start the game as normal. This should work, if it doesn’t there might be some special procedure that has to be done for that specific game, try to google for it. You can also try running the game from another backup manager.
If you experience any problems let me know and I’ll try to help you out.

i dont get what your saying
so do i. is there a video or something on vision?
Step 1 — said data is corrupted when it gets to around 78%.
Step 2– link to file download doesn’t work.
any updates?
I had no problem redownloading the file from step 1 but I’ve added a new download-link.
Step 2 is no longer needed since most (if not all) of the Backup Managers now have that patch integrated.
/Crax
Step 1 — I didn’t have a problem downloading the program. My problem came when loading it onto my PS3.
I created the folders on a flash drive, put the file in, and went to update my PS3 via storage media. It found the update and began installing.. but when it got to around 78%, it said “data is corrupted” each time. I’m unsure of what to do?
Aha, I get it now. And you have 3.55 ofw on your PS3 now?
appears I have 3.56 — any idea on how to downgrade it?
Right now there’s no way (at least no safe way) to downgrade from 3.56. If you try you will most likely brick your PS3. There will probably be a cfw for 3.56 in a not too distant future though.
download it five times 1 will work then delete the 1s that dont work
damnit, Crax
thats game prices going up then
i presume hacked ps3′s havnt been banned from psn yet then as i got pulled into a match on mw2 the otherday with a patched game super jump, super speed and one shot kills….
i hope this goes the other way and allows official open sourcing and not piracy on games, but i have a feeling the ps3 will go like the psp and just be ruined by people wanting to freeload on games
lame
I don’t think the game prices will rise. It’s more likely that the games will need PSN access to work though. I don’t know if my PS3 is banned from the network since it’s not connected to the Internet, but since I got a letter from Sony telling me that I was going to be banned I probably am.
My PS3 isn’t for playing pirated games, I’ve backed up my originals and I play homebrew and blurays on it. In my book Sony is really overreacting with the way they’ve handled this whole mess. I don’t care if my hacked PS3 is banned from PSN, if I want to play online I use my Xbox instead. But I think that I should have the right to do what I want with stuff I’ve bought and own.
Please I need a help on how to hack my ps3. I want the softwars links and full details on how to do it. Thanks
I don’t know how to do it with the newer OFW that’s been released. Try some forum for PS3 modders.
Read a few of your posts and have thought they were really intresting. looking forward to seeing more from you.
It is actually a nice and useful piece of info. I?m satisfied that you simply shared this useful information with us. Please stay us up to date like this. Thanks for sharing.
i am very new… as in today as learning how to hack ps3 becouse i normally hack the wii. is there a homebrew for ps3 or something like that and if there is can you tell me how to get it with usb sd card ect. like the download files i need or whatever i need.
I am very new to the system of ps3. Please can you explain it to me further on how to hack my ps3, because I really want to backup my games in my ps3. Thank you.
i need to hack my sign in acount<3
Good luck with that
So can you still play bluerays on a hacked ps3
Yes, that’s pretty much all my PS3 does these days. I prefer playing on my Xbox or PC.
this is all old and by the way if you hack your ps3 your just taking the fun out of it for everybody so just stop with the bs guys
Haha, wow. Nothing gets past you! Who would have thought that a post that’s about a year old actually contained old information?
Why would hacking my console remove the fun for you? I don’t pirate games and I don’t play online and the fun is not like it’s magically infused in the firmware you know.
Besides my PS3 is pretty much a dust collector as it is, I only use it for watching bluray movies.
And my sex life has never ever been affected in any negative way by my gaming consoles being hacked or not. Nor has it been negatively affected by my gaming hobby. Why you think this should be a factor in any way, I do not know.
And last but not least, I do actually have a life, that’s why it’s almost a year since my last post here, I do however feed the trolls on occasion like today.
or better yet just get off the ps3and get layed its so much better trust me video games have gotten stupid they have taken most of the violence away from us so try getting out of the house and getting a fuckin life
Awesome things here. I’m very glad to look your post. Thanks so much and I am looking ahead to touch you. Will you please drop me a e-mail?
