The apartment takes shape

So after a weekend of moving stuff around I’ve finally figured out how I want things. Check the pictures below, there are some pictures showing the apartment after I got the new wallpapers on the walls (check out this post to see the old ones).

Student charged for school hacking

Here I was, calm and collected, reading some news online. Then I see this headline, and my mind literally went numb while I read the article, and the only thing I could think of was “What…? But…? How…?”.

The story goes like this: A 15 year old kid in New York State hacked a server at his school. Now you think “Yeah, but if he hacked his school he should be charged for it!”, and under different circumstances I would agree with you. The kid found an unsecure file with personal data such as social security numbers, home addresses and such information. Now you probably think he should be punished even more, since he now had enough information to commit identity theft, and so on. But the story isn’t over yet. The kid emailed the school’s principal and told him about the faulty server and the unsecure file, signing the E-mail with “A student”. The principal and the IT department tracked down the kid and had him charged with three felonies. Why do that to someone that obviously helped you in the first place!?

Knowing what to do when you find a security hole is not easy, I personally try to contact the owner of the server via an anonymous address and using several proxies. To show the severity of the problem I often try to attach some (pretty harmless) PoC so that the owner sees the problem. I do this because not everyone that goes online are as nice as I am, and that’s what I would like someone to do if it was MY server.

I really feel for the guy, even though both I and most likely even he knew what he did was illegal, he obviously didn’t want to harm anyone. If he hadn’t notified the principal maybe he never would have been caught at all. My guess is that now he never will notify anyone about their security flaws again.

New wallpapers

Yep, that’s true. Today my new apartment will get some new wallpapers! And believe me, it REALLY needs it. The old ones literally hangs on the walls, if you don’t believe me I will post some before and after pictures in the Gallery when they are done. Hopefully they will be done on Friday, so that I can start moving in on Saturday morning as planned. As soon as I’m starting to feel at home I will invite some close friends and their girlfriends (or other female companion) to a Moving-in-dinner.

This new apartment feels like the best thing that has happened to me since I got my job, speaking of which I need to continue with right now.

Congratulations Obama!

Woke up about 5:40 am (UTC+1) today, just in time to hear Obama’s victory speech. In my opinion, it was the best possible way to start the morning.

For those of you who missed this incredibly well written speech, check it out here (part one), here (part two) and here (part three).
